As the Spirit Directs

Crazy to think that week 6 is here con mi tio baracho (with my drunk uncle) I guess that's what they call your first companion out of training here. I see it as a fitting term for my favorite Peruano. Especially when he tries to speak English. Hilarious.

This week was a lot of finding activities through inactives and part member families. And a lot more contacting. I don't know what the deal is. With my trainer, I never contacted once. With Elder V, yeah a little bit when we were looking for people specifically, but I'm starting to see there's not a lot of fruit there either. This week was a lot of just strait up contacting and I don't know what the deal is with my comps, but that's where the gold and the fun is.

I'm at the point where it's all tranquillo (calm, no big deal) and I can enter a house, make conversation, make 'em laugh, and give a lesson in any situation. And that's honestly where I've enjoyed a lot of my time. Asking old ladies for homemade juice. Talking about futbol teams I have no idea about. Asking people about their lives, and sitting with total strangers and being able to talk with them about what matters most to them.  And then offering them something that will improve that life or thing they love, and leaving it to them to decide if they're going to take it. It's really cool, funny, and makes for a lot of great stories.

Like the tree we sat under, that has literally 20 hens in it and and one house had a "leader" on the ground that would walk back and forth clucking and screeching and all 20 others would follow form to where it was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk and this old lady, as wide as she is tall, chasing around the leader hen with a broom--swearing in Guarani.

Or, the man we shared a lesson about how the family can be eternal in the presence of God, but all need to be baptized and sealed. We told him this is why we'd like to teach his whole family, and not just him. He thought for a second, and let us know that he'd tell certain members of his family and not others--because some he was cool to spend eternity with, but others he didn't like enough.

Or, like accidentally saying hend'u instead of hend'ù in Guarani to a lady. One meaning something is difficult, the other meaning "go to hell" basically, and her yelling at me and telling me to wash my mouth. Sorry lady, it's my third language, look at how white I am, you think this was on purpose?

hend'ù es. (it's difficult)

But, life is good and no one can stop me as long as I've got Latino Mario with me, ole Nell (my phannie pack) and my tanks (Dansko shoes).

This week the goals are 1) teach only through the promptings of the Spirit
2) if we see a man in a house, we enter and teach.

We are just doing our best. God will make up the difference.

Finally, I wanted to share something spiritual.

Mainly, that I believe in God and His son, Jesus Christ based on the things I KNOW, not on the things I don't know. He is not a filler. He is not the answer for when I don't have one. He is not the invisible man that I believe in and exists just because I believe. He is the loving Father that lives in Heaven, who created you and me, and who loves every one of His children. He wants us to live with him after this life, and to have joy in this life as well. He is not the filler, He is the beginning and the End. Just as we can not see sunshine, we can not see the wind, we can not see love, we can feel these things and influences. I know God lives, because I have felt it, and His spirit has testified to me.

My only purpose here for 2 years, is to invite all, including you, the reader, whoever you are, to see if you can't feel this as well. Do not put the burden of proof on God, but seek Him.  Look for Him sincerely, and tell me that you can not find Him that you can not feel his love.

Doctrine & Covenants 88:63. If you look, you will find, and then you too, will know.

Con Cariño,

Elder Yocum
